Juxtapositions & Metaphors

Juxtapositions

In the picture above, it's clearly showing us that there is a contrast. Building with a car (left) and a normal building (right). Both are the same object or entity (building) but contrast in characteristic or appearance. This picture is one of the good example for juxtapositions.

Juxtapositions - synonymous with contrast, two objects or texts that oppose one another (wikipedia)

Juxtapositions also can be seen from literature and movies.

Example :-

"In *American Gangster*, Steve Zaillian juxtaposes two present-day narratives separately starring the two main characters on the opposite sides of the law. Only in the end do the cop (Russell Crowe) and the criminal (Denzel Washington) finally meet, and the startling resolution is achieved."

Metaphors

from Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis for Harley-Davidson

A metaphor is an analogy between two objects or ideas; the analogy is conveyed by the use of a metaphorical word in place of some other word. For example: "Her eyes were glistening jewels".
Metaphor also denotes rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison, or resemblance (e.g., antithesis, hyperbole, metonymy, and simile, which are all types of metaphor). - wikipedia

To simplify, a figure of speech in which an implicit comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common.

Mortar and Pestle

Mortar and Pestle?? Sounds like weapon or gun for me. After Mr. Razi show what is the mortar and pestle was.."BATU LESUNG rupe-rupenyer"...

We were given A3 size paper to do some exercise about "Batu Lesung". We need to choose 5 random words from logical mind map of mortar and pestle. Then we need to invent what will people use it in the future.

I've chosen 7 random words and manage to complete 4 words of explanation.

1) noise - Instrument , like stone sound. Different mortar size will make different sound.
2) weapon - Mortar and pestle are quite heavy so it can deal a great damage especially when in a close combat. Mortar can be place at fist and pestle can be attach by rope and can be use as a throw and pull weapon.
3) exercise - pestle can replace dumbbells
4) power - call spirit

Method of creative thinking

Exercise: Do a creative digital mind map of myself

When I'm creating my mind map, suddenly I felt like to create it with a cartoon style. I'm quite familiar with 3d software so I'm using 3ds max to create the character and the background. For text and other effects, I've used photoshop to create it.

Logical Mind-map and Associated Mind-map.

Logical Mind-map consist stereotype words which is related to the central subject.
Mind-map consist random words which show that the links between words have no connection.

Stereotype
- can be defined as standardized and simplified conceptions, opinion or image of group based on some prior assumption.

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention.

From the google web definition;

Novelty - The concept that the claims must be totally new. The invention must never have been made public in any way, anywhere, before the date on which the application for a patent is filed. In the US this is determined by the date of invention.

Creativity - Creativity is a mental process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the existing ideas or concepts, fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight.

Innovation - Innovation is a new way of doing something or "new stuff that is made useful". It may refer to incremental and emergent or radical and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations.

Invention - An invention is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough.

From my point of view, all of this terms somehow can be related to each others. Creativity is usually related to the new ideas and concepts. In order to make that new ideas work, then innovation come into place. Innovation is more to practicality and idea development. For novelty, it's really subjective because we can't fully sure that something we created is really new and original. For invention, in order to be the inventors, we need to gather all of the existing knowledge and create new ideas. Creativity and innovation also playing important role for invention.

Imagine that in this world, there are billions of people. Everyday they keep on generating the new ideas. But how many of the new ideas were successfully be implemented to our life??

Defining Creativity

Creative Image of my friend

This is one the image that my friend have edited. He used to stay at Crescent 1 last trimester. This image really nice edited. The color of this picture gave me the cold feeling and somehow it makes me feel lonely when I look at this picture. Nice perspective and reflection. It still delivered the serenity and calm emotion because of the picture is well horizontally position.

Introduction to Creative Studies

How to define creative?? or understand the meaning of "creative". There are tons of definition of it if we google it. From what I've understand, creative means creating new ideas and concepts or invent something new.

For Creative Studies class, I hope I can improve my creativity and learned many new concepts, skills and knowledge. My creative thinking isn't very good maybe because of lack of practicality and experiences. My expectation is that I hope I can improve my thinking and my creative side.
